Keveral Open Day — Man-v-Machine

Keveral Open DayA great day was had by all at Keveral’s fantastic, and fun Open Day on Saturday the 27th May.

Hopefully this will be an annual event, and, hopefully too, Skyegrove will be hosting their own Open Day in the very near future.

The highlight of the Open Day was the Man-v-Machine Competition. All three contestants were well supported by the good-natured crowd.

So! — Was Mark ‘Bertie Bertollini’s’ mower knobbled? Will there be a revenge / grudge match at Skyegrove?

Let’s hope so! — Something we can all look forward to!

Don’t forget! — This weekend the wonderful craft fair, including scything competitions, at Muchelney, Somerset will be taking place (see our previous post Green Scythe Fair). Not to be missed!

Peggy & Gloria

Peggy and GloriaSkyegrove are delighted to extend a very warm welcome to our latest residents — Peggy & Gloria. They are Cornish Large Blacks (pigs), coming from the rare Queenie Line, of which there only five sows left. If they behave themselves they could save their bacon!

Seriously though, we are hoping to use them as breeding sows, but they are great for cleaning up all our waste vegetables, to aid a closed loop system, and also producing manure.

Pentiddy Open Day & Scything

Pentiddy LogoJust to let you know, Pentiddy Natural burial grounds will be having their first open day on the 8th of April with over 30 craft stalls, workshops, talks, and produce stalls. Kevin from Skyegrove will be holding a scything workshop and demonstration for novices and experienced scythers.

Don’t forget that it is International Peening day on the 2nd of April, but SkyeGrove will be holding a Peen and Meet Day for scythers on the Sunday 9th of April.

Scything Demonstration

Scything-Demo

After winning the Scything Championship the weekend before, Kevin gave a Scything Demo at Skyegrove on Saturday the 18th of June 2016.

The time taken to complete the 1/4 acre field was 57 minutes 50 seconds, however,  Kevin did stop to talk to someone for around 5 minutes.

Please enjoy the video of the demo below:-

Save Our Bees

Bee“Spring’s finally here! The flowers are blooming and the bees are back. But right now toxic pesticide companies and powerful lobbyists are putting together plans to get the UK ban on bee-killing pesticides lifted.

The pesticides, called neonicotinoids, are banned across Europe because they’re responsible for killing our bees. But Liz Truss, our Environment Minister, could ignore the ban and allow them onto British fields for crops planted this summer . . .”
